Duterte pushes for law banning firecrackers, pyrotechnics

MANILA, January 9, 2018 — President Rodrigo Duterte wants to push for a measure to ban firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices in the country.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque on Tuesday said the President gave the directive during the Cabinet meeting last Monday.

“He wants Congress to enact this law at the soonest time possible so that the public debate on the banning of fireworks and pyrotechnics could begin as early as possible,” Roque said.

He said the President views firecrackers and pyrotechnics as inimical to human health and safety.

Roque gave assurance that discussions with stakeholders would begin once a bill is passed in Congress.

He said the President likewise instructed the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to look for alternative livelihoods for around 75,000 Filipinos working in the industry, Roque added. (PCO-Content)
